To Tree or Not to Tree

I'm working on this drawing, I want to add something to the drawing to give the picture more movement, I was thinking some kind of tree + leaves combo but I'm having trouble fitting them in there.

I feel like they're at the their minimum in terms of size/croppage, If I start making them any smaller or further away they'll start being unrecognizable.

Maybe the solution is just to rearrange a few branches? Or is it okay that the branches/wheels touch?

With trees:

Without trees:

The dimensions are fixed so I can't widen or lengthen.

Ideas? Feel free to draw over it. Other suggestions also welcome.

  1. Awesome work, Alexis!
This is a tough one, I'd have to say though, the tree in the first one might be a little bit too crowded and heavy; I find my eye going right too that. Although, with the tree there, I can balance out where the bike is in the air, 'x amount high', determined by the tree.

Where as with the second one, it separates the two objects, the foreground and the background. It seems in the second one that the rider is getting tons of air, E.T. style, which is pretty cool but I'm not sure if that's your desired effect. You can always add (minimal) speed/action lines with leaves without having the tree there. I'm not sure what to add for motion, but you can get radial 'swooshes' resembling a gust of air - if that makes any sense. Hope I helped somewhat!

  2. that is totally you on the flying bicycle, isn't it?

I like it with the tree in! Actually I find that the direction of the branches kind of lends to the upwards motion of the piece. They lead the eye in the right direction. I think that it's okay that they overlap, as long as you are careful to separate them with colour. If the bike pops, while the branches fade into the background, I think it'll work really well.

    Can't wait to see more!

  3. Ka,
I think you summed up what I didn't realize I was feeling about the tree: they give a sense of how high the person up is in the air. I really love the idea of the leaves giving some directional pull, I was tentatively going with that with some leafy shapes but I didn't really think enough about where I put them. Thank you!

    Kaley,

I CAN'T STOP DRAWING MYSELF. I think you're right, the more I look at it the more I'm into the branches. I think maybe if I leave them as mostly blank white or light shapes with minimal texture they will 'stand out' enough.

  4. I like the directional lines of the tree too. Have you thought about using clouds though? This rough is coming along well! I can't wait to see the next edition :)

  5. I have vaguely thought about clouds, I should probably plan that out! Duhr. This is the kind of compositional thing I have a tendency to leave until the last minute haha. Good idea to get it in now! Thanks Ian.

Also, Ian, where are your story boards? Let's see 'em!
